Hurricanes Tennis Edges Mercy; East Hampton Wins Non-League Match

It has not been the usual dominant season for the Westhampton Beach girls tennis team, but after losing three matches this season by identical 4-3 scores, the Lady Hurricanes finally came out on the winning end of a nail-biter on Monday.

The Lady Hurricanes edged Mercy, 4-3, on the road in Riverhead, and Yesha Dalal and Mira Patel were the heroes, winning a hard-fought three-set match at third doubles to clinch the deciding fourth point. They lost the first set 7-6 (7-5), before winning the next two, 6-1 and 7-5.

Before beating Mercy, Westhampton Beach suffered 4-3 loss to both Ross and Smithtown East. Against Ross, Westhampton won at first and second singles and at third doubles. At first singles, Laura Halsey beat Abby Okin in three sets, 6-3, 4-6 and 6-1, and at second singles, Jodie Sipala downed Constance Caiola, 6-4 and 6-3. At third doubles, Bo Felske and Hailey Ciolino beat Daisy Gallaher and Livia Azevedo, 6-1, 6-7 and 7-6.

In the non-league loss to Smithtown East, Sarah Strebel won, 6-1 and 6-2, at fourth singles; Gen Spanarkel and Sabrina Salvi won, 6-3 and 6-4, at second doubles; and Felske and Ciolino won, 7-6 (7-5) and 6-4, at third doubles.

The Lady Hurricanes began the week with a 6-1 non-league loss to Commack on September 24, where Halsey got the only point, winning, 6-1 and 6-1, at first singles.

Westhampton Beach moved to 2-4 in League VII, 2-7 overall, fourth in the league. Floyd remained unbeaten at 5-0, 12-0, followed by East Hampton (4-1, 6-1) and Ross (4-2, 5-3).

East Hampton

The Lady Bonackers had just two matches last week, a 4-3 non-league home win over East Islip on September 24 and a 5-2 win at Bay Shore two days later, also a non-league contest.

Against East Islip, Gillian Neubert won, 6-2 and 6-3, at second singles, while Maggie Pizzo won, 6-4 and 6-3, at second singles. Isabel Peters and Maddie Aldrich teamed up for a 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2 win at first doubles, and Lily Kot and Cece Combemale won, 6-4 and 6-3, at second doubles.

East Hampton swept the singles matches against Bay Shore with Carly Grossman winning, 6-0 and 6-0, at first, Peters winning, 6-0 and 6-1, at second, Aldrich winning, 6-0 and 6-0, at third, and Pizzo winning, 6-0 and 6-0, at fourth. Combemale and Kot won, 6-3 and 6-3, at first doubles.

Southampton

The Lady Mariners split two non-league matches last week, losing, 6-1, at Harborfields on September 25 before beating Walt Whitman, 4-3, at home two days later. Southampton is 5-2 in League VIII, with its only losses coming against undefeated leader Mattituck. The Lady Mariners are 6-4 overall.
