Two relay teams and three individual swimmers posted times that qualified them for the county meet—and one qualified for states—in the East Hampton girls swim team’s 105-80 win at Brentwood on Friday.
Senior Marina Preiss will make her fifth trip to states after hitting the qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle, an event she won on Friday in 54.20 seconds. Preiss also qualified for counties in the 50-yard freestyle, winning that race in 24.94 seconds, and she will be seeking to hit the state qualifying standard in that event at some point this season as well.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Cecelia DeHavenon finished first and met the county qualifying time, finishing in 2:06.63. In the 500-yard freestyle, Lilah Minetree was second in 5:57.90, which qualified her for counties. East Hampton’s 200-yard medley relay team of Preiss, Shannon Ryan, Morgan German and Minetree finished first in 2:02.57, qualifying for counties, while the 200-yard freestyle relay team of German, Ryan, Minetree and Paola Criollo hit the county meet time, winning the race in 1:51.24.
There were other standout performances in the meet as well. Marikate Ryan and Isabella Swanson finished second and third, respectively, in the 200-yard individual medley, with times of 2:29.92, a personal-best for Ryan, and 2:31.34 for Swanson. DeHavenon was second in the 100 free to Preiss in 59.6 seconds, which also qualified her for counties. Lindsey Stevens won the 100-yard backstroke (her time was not available) while Marikate Ryan was second in 1:11.33. Shannon Ryan won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:24.60, and the 400-yard freestyle relay of Minetree, German, Marikate Ryan and DeHavenon finished first (time not available).
East Hampton head coach John McGeehan described the meet as “outstanding,” saying that many events were hotly contested at the end, and that the battle for the win went back and forth for much of the meet. As of Monday, he was still waiting to hear back from the Brentwood coach for official times and placements for several events, explaining that some of Brentwood’s scoring equipment was a bit outdated.
ON THE SCHEDULE: Monday, 10/7, vs. Harborfields, 4:30 p.m.; Thursday, 10/10, vs. Sayville/Bayport, 5 p.m.
