Two motor vehicle accidents occurred within half an hour of each other in Speonk on the night of October 2, sending two men to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the Eastport Fire Department.
The first accident, which occurred at 7:44 p.m. on Old Country Road, just west of Phillips Avenue, involved a motorcyclist driving into the back of a car. The Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance transported the cyclist, who was not identified, to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to fire department officials. The driver of the car was uninjured.
Southampton Town Police said the accident report had not yet been filed, so they were unable to identify those involved or speculate about a cause of the crash.
Firefighters closed Old Country Road in both directions while the accident was cleared.
Shortly after the road reopened, Eastport firefighters were called to another accident, this one on Montauk Highway in Speonk, at 8:13 p.m. after a man veered from his lane and hit a utility pole on the opposite side of the road, according to Eastport Fire Department public information officer Francis “Bud” Mazura.
The driver, who was not immediately identified, was also taken to Peconic Bay by a Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. The cause of that accident also was not immediately clear.
