Sharks Golf Wins At Least A Share Of League Title

For the seventh time in nine seasons, the Eastport South Manor boys golf team has won at least a share of the League VII title after finishing the season with a 10-1 record.

Mattituck, which was 8-1 heading into its match on Monday, could still share the league title with the Sharks if it wins its final two matches this week. ESM won the league title outright last season.

ESM secured a share of the title with two wins to end its season last week. The Sharks defeated Riverhead, 8-1, at Hampton Hills Country Club on October 16, then won by the same score the following day over Hampton Bays at Calverton Links.

ESM head coach Todd Skala gave a lot of credit to his team, which saw a few seniors leave at the beginning of the season, leaving what was already a young team. The team’s top player, freshman Kyle Tillinghast, who is already in his third year on the team, now holds the lowest average in program history at 39.4. Matt Kontagianis, back in 2005, previously held the school record with a 39.8.

“Guys had to step up as they got thrust into the starting lineup, and they did well,” Skala said.

ESM defeated Riverhead last week with a team stroke total of 221-230. Tillinghast shot a team-low 39 but it wasn’t enough to beat Riverhead’s Cody Weiss, who shot a 38 on the front nine at Hampton Hills, which is a par-35 course. Freshman Joey Busiello and junior Tyler Simmons both shot 41s to win their matches.

In the win over Hampton Bays, Tillinghast shot a 37 on the front nine at Calverton, another par-35 course. Busiello shot a 38, Simmons shot a 40, and sophomore Connor Mantel shot a 41. The Sharks won team stroke total, 206-222.

ESM will be in the League VII Qualifying Tournament this Friday at Cherry Creek Golf Links in Riverhead. The top 21 individuals in the tournament will qualify for the county tournament, which is held in May at Rock Hill Golf Club in Manorville. ESM already qualified its top six players for the team tournament by winning a piece of the league title.

Hampton Bays/Westhampton Beach

The Westhampton Beach boys golf team ended its season with a 6-3 loss to East Hampton at its host club, Westhampton Beach Country Club, on October 13. The Hurricanes finished with a 2-8 League VIII record.

Prior to losing to ESM last week, Hampton Bays defeated Shelter Island, 7.5-1.5, at Calverton Links on October 15. Hampton Bays is 2-9 in League VII.
