Water Mill Community Notes, October 24

Congratulations to James and Liz Comfort, who won the quilt made by volunteers at the Water Mill Museum. Marilyn Burden, a member of the museum board, presented the quilt to Liz at the annual meeting on October 15. This raffle is a significant fundraiser for the museum each year and lucky is the one who holds the winning ticket for a beautiful quilt. As I’ve written here before, Water Mill seems to be apple central this time of year and if you’ve ever wondered about the process of growing apples, you might want to sign up for the Peconic Land Trust’s tour of the Milk Pail Store and Orchard in Water Mill that will take place this Saturday, October 26, at 10 a.m. Admission is $5 to this rain or shine event, and you must register in advance by calling 283-3195.

Across from the main Milk Pail farm is Fairview Farm, home of the huge corn maze. It was really cool to see an Instagram post by comedian Jimmy Fallon asking his followers to guess the corn maze, which happened to be Fairview. Besides an overhead view of the maze, a photo from inside the maze was also posted. These two posts pulled in thousands of likes and hundreds of comments.

The clock is ticking toward the deadline to nominate individuals for the annual Southampton Press Community First award given to someone who is having an impact on their community. If you’ve got a neighbor, friend, or relative making a difference, let us know. Tell us how their actions benefit the lives of others and the local community. We are looking for those unsung heroes out there who do good with little fanfare. Write a brief, compelling story about the individual, what distinguishes him or her from others, and highlight how the nominee’s actions benefit the lives of others. One nominee will be honored with the award and be profiled in our Hamptons Holiday supplement. A donation will also be made to the winner’s charity. Send nominations to me (for this one, I wear my supplements editor hat) at kim@pressnewsgroup.com. It must be received no later than October 25.
