An East Hampton woman was arrested on October 22 after leaving her infant in her car while shopping at Walmart in Riverhead, according to Riverhead Town Police.
Police received a call from a passing pedestrian in the Walmart parking lot at 1:27 p.m. on Tuesday, when the passerby noticed a baby crying inside the vehicle. When officers arrived, they determined that the baby’s parent or guardian was not nearby and so they forced entry to the car and removed the child. The baby was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corp for observation because it was “a little warm” in the car, according to police, who also said the child was not injured but was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures.
The mother of the infant, Theresa Thu Tran, 27, was arrested on the scene when she came out of Walmart and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. She was arraigned at Riverhead Town Justice Court the same day and released on her own recognizance. She is due back in court on November 4 at 9:30 a.m.
