Flanders Man Arrested For Attempting To Rob McDonald’s Of Hamburgers, Money

A Flanders man was arrested Sunday morning for attempting to rob the McDonald’s on Flanders Road in Riverside.

Juan Mendez-DePaz, 33, approached the restaurant’s drive-thru window on foot wearing a black cowboy hat and a black vest shortly after midnight, according to New York State Police. He placed his hand inside his vest and directed an employee to give him some hamburgers and money, threatening to shoot the worker with two pistols he said he had concealed.

The employee instead called police who arrived a short time later and confronted Mr. Mendez-DePaz in the McDonald’s parking lot. He displayed a large knife on his hip but, after a struggle, State Troopers were able to arrest him, according to a press release issued on Monday morning.

Mr. Mendez-DePaz, who police said did not have a gun on him, was charged with first-degree robbery, a felony, as well as fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.

He is being held at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.
