Suffolk County Police said they are searching for a large vehicle, possibly a truck or an SUV, that is believed to be metallic blue in color.
A woman was killed and her male companion injured in a hit-and-run accident on Montauk Highway on Saturday night in Eastport, police said.
Erika Strebel, 27, of Eastport and Edward Barton, 26, of East Moriches were standing near Ms. Strebel’s disabled 1988 Jeep on the shoulder of the eastbound lane at about 9:05 p.m. when a vehicle that was traveling east on Montauk Highway struck them and then fled, according to Suffolk County Police.
Police said Ms. Strebel was transported by East Moriches Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where she was pronounced dead.
Mr. Barton was transported by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was treated for head and knee injuries.
Police said the vehicle that fled sustained front end damage and the investigation is ongoing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
