Teen Charged With Sexual Assault At Phoenix House In East Hampton

UPDATE, 1:55 P.M.:

According to court records, the assault took place at 4:30 p.m. and caused a “sharp and persistent pain to the victim,” who was taken to Southampton Hospital and underwent surgery.

Mr. Cardinali admitted to police Sunday night that he committed the act, saying, “I put the broomstick in his butt and I twisted it back and forth,” according to the court records.

He pleaded not guilty on Monday. Bail was set at $250,000 cash or $500,000 bond. He remains in police custody.

A 16-year-old allegedly sexually assaulted another male at the Phoenix House rehabilitation center on Sunday, according to East Hampton Town Police.

Joseph Cardinali, 16, of Rockville Centre, was arrested by police on Sunday when they responded to the Phoenix House for a report of violence. According to police, Mr. Cardinali had used a wooden broom handle to penetrate the rectum of the 18-year-old male victim.

Police said he was charged with aggravated sexual abuse in the first degree, a felony, and assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor.

He was expected to be arraigned Monday morning at East Hampton Town Justice Court.
