The SS Class Association continued its sailing season with an afternoon of racing at Westhampton Yacht Squadron on Saturday. A brisk southwest wind was blowing by the time the boats had reached the starting line, making for good conditions.
SS #135, skippered by Rob Dudley and crewed by Jim Ewing, won the first race to take the Atwater Cup. The intensity of competition for this prize was evidenced by the entire fleet crossing the finish line in the same minute.
The overall winner of the day for the three-handled Association Cup was SS #143. She was making her first appearance of the season, skippered by Scott Apmann and crewed by Todd Apmann and Elizabeth Apmann. At 10 years old, Elizabeth is the fleet’s youngest junior sailor. She joins skippers Kylie Cast and Henry Smyth. Adding Elizabeth to the roster means that more than one quarter of the participants in this race were juniors.
