The Reverend Michael Smith of the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church in Southampton has been appointed to the Council for the State University of New York at Stony Brook for a six-year term.
Rev. Smith, who served on the board of directors for Southampton Hospital in 2005 and as a Shinnecock Tribal Council member from 2001 to 2003, will be replacing fellow East End resident Diana Weir on the board. He was appointed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday, and his term will expire on June 30, 2020.
According to the Stony Brook University website, the Stony Brook Council is an advisory body to the campus and to the university president and senior officers. It is composed of 10 members—nine of whom, like Rev. Smith, are appointed by the governor. One student member is elected every other year from the undergraduate or graduate student body.
Rev. Smith did not return calls seeking comment this week.
