Jess Bennett of Southampton was recently hired as a music teacher at Binghamton High School in Binghamton, New York. Jess graduated in the Top 10 scholars from Southampton High School in 2008. From there, she went on to study at Ithaca College in the School of Music. Jess is the daughter of Billy and Diane Bennett, also of Southampton. Jess will specialize in guitar and music technology instruction in her new teaching position. Congratulations, Jess, and good luck!Shinnecock elder Elizabeth Chee Chee Thunderbird Haile hosted a “Dancin’ with the Oldies” party at the United Methodist Church this past Saturday, August 16, in celebration of her husband Dick Haile’s 90th birthday. More than 100 family members and friends joined in the festivities and watched as the lively couple energetically took to the dance floor. A buffet of poached salmon, meatballs, salads and sweet treats was served. There were raffles and a silent auction to benefit the Padohquohan Medicine Lodge. Congratulations, Dick, on turning 90. Here’s to many more birthdays filled with family, friends and of course, some dancing!

Last week, due to inclement weather, the Concert in the Park was canceled. Happily, the New Life Crisis performance has been rescheduled for this Friday, August 22, at 6:30 p.m. at Coopers Beach. So bring your picnics, beach chairs and blankets and head to Coopers for what is sure to be one of the best performances of the summer.

Now on to some calendar items to keep in mind through the end of August. The Shinnecock Powwow will be held over Labor Day weekend, beginning Friday, August 29, at 3 p.m. on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton. The festival will continue at 10 a.m. each day, from Saturday, August 30, through Monday, September 1. There will be traditional dance performances, Native arts, food and crafts from more than 100 vendors, raffles and more. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and children age 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and under. Parking is free.

Also on Labor Day weekend, the Basilica Parish of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary on Hill Street will hold its annual Tent Party on Saturday, August 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $35; $40 at the door. Tickets for a 50/50 raffle can be purchased at the parish office.

Looking ahead, the Southampton Fire Department will host its annual muster on Saturday, September 6, on Pond Lane in Southampton Village. Fire departments from all over Long Island come out to participate in this day-long event of friendly competition. The day includes races such as the midnight alarm relay race, efficiency run, whale boat race and more. Plus, there will be food, raffles and merchandise for sale. Join in the fun and support your local fire department. Hope to see you all out there on September 6th!
