The Southampton, Pierson and East Hampton boys golf teams have been the dominant squads in League VIII in recent years, and they all got off to a good start last week.
East Hampton breezed to a 9-0 win over Ross at the South Fork Country Club in Amagansett on September 11, winning all its head-to-head matches. Eighth-grader Turner Foster shot a 41 to lead the Bonackers while junior Stephen Kane (45), senior Josue Palacios (46), junior Regis O’Neil (44), senior Jack Bistrian (45), sophomore Ryan White (43), junior Kevin Boles (46), and eighth-grader Nathan Wright (48) all contributed to East Hampton’s win. Southampton started off with a 7-2 win over Westhampton Beach at the Southampton Golf Club on the same day, playing the par 34 front nine. Sophomore Christian Oakley shot a 3-over 37, while senior Matt Morgani shot a 42. Southampton had a team stroke total of 221 compared to 237 for Westhampton Beach.
“It was a good showing by both teams,” Southampton head coach Tim Schreck said. “Especially since we both had several first-time varsity golfers in their first match.”
Southampton was supposed to face Ross on September 9, but Schreck said the match was canceled by Ross—giving Southampton the win—and he said it won’t be rescheduled.
Both Beudert and Schreck expect their teams to be strong again, but said the league is well-balanced, with Pierson and Westhampton Beach also possessing talent. Southampton lost five seniors last year, but has one of the top players in the league in Oakley. Morgani, junior Tim Kreymborg and sophomore Tom Fullam are strong returning players as well.
Pierson opened its season with an 8.5-0.5 win over Center Moriches at the Noyack Golf Club on September 11. Sophomore Matt Burke (45), sophomore Jack Brown (47), senior Charles Canavan (47), senior Ben Kushner (44), and freshman Tyler Laborne (46) all shot well, with Brown halving his match at the number two spot. Pierson had a 229-268 advantage in team stroke total.
