After a rough start to the season with a pair of lopsided non-league losses, the Pierson boys soccer team was on the winning end of a game last week, beating Stony Brook 2-0 on the road in its League VIII opener on Thursday.
Jack Fitzpatrick, who led Pierson in scoring last year and was one of the top goal scorers in all of Suffolk County, scored twice in quick succession in the second half to lead the Whalers. He buried his first shot in the 53rd minute, and added the second just a minute later. Cameron Burton and John Chisholm had the assists, and Chase Zimmerman made three saves to record the shutout.
Two days later, Pierson suffered a 3-0 home loss at the hands of Westhampton Beach (League V). Zimmerman made five saves in the losing effort. Pierson was down only 1-0 at the half, but the Hurricanes tacked on two more insurance goals in the second.
Pierson head coach Peter Solow said Zimmerman played well in the loss against the larger school, but said the team didn’t have its best performance that day.
“Chase played very well,” Solow said. “One of the goals was on a penalty kick. Overall I think we were inconsistent and didn’t finish the opportunities we had. We’re improving but still need to get some things straightened out.”
The Lady Whalers fell to 0-2, 0-1 in League VII, after a 6-0 loss at Mercy (2-0) on Friday. Pierson was down 2-0 at halftime before the game got out of reach in the second half. Pierson goalie Hayley Lund made 15 saves in the loss.
