It hasn’t been an easy preseason for the Hampton Bays girls gymnastics team, however, the Lady Baymen are hopeful the competitive non-league schedule they have been working through will strengthen their chances going into the league season.
The Lady Baymen dropped to 0-4 with a 152.55-115.1 loss to League II team Smithtown on September 18 at home and a 138.5-114.6 loss to League II squad Harborfields.
“The season has been packed with meets very early this year,” Hampton Bays coach Amy Stangasser said. “We haven’t had much time to work on skills; it’s been routines only.
She continued, “We are still short on vaulters and hope to advance two gymnasts to vault in the next two weeks.”
Against Smithtown, Gabby Morea scored an 8.0 on the vault and, according to coach Stangasser, “stuck [the] landing.” Morea also scored an 8.25 in tumbling.
Captain Cassie McCuen finished with a 6.80 on the balance beam where she “performed a confident beam routine” and “is a hard worker who practices to her fullest,” according to coach Stangasser.
On the beam, Kaylee Catena scored a 7.70 while Katie McNamara scored a 6.5 in the floor exercise with what Stangasser noted as “beautiful dance, jumps, leaps, and turns.”
Statistics from the meet with Harborfields were not available at press time.
Hampton Bays will travel to Lindenhurst for its first League III meet on October 1.
