The Eastport South Manor girls cross country squad was the last undefeated team standing in League IV as of Monday morning, following its 23-32 victory over Huntington at Sunken Meadow Park in Kings Park on September 30. The Lady Sharks are now 3-0.
Taylor McClay won the 3-mile race in 19:18 while teammate Ashley Schafer took third place in 20:23.
The Lady Sharks then traveled upstate over the weekend to compete in the Grout Invitational in Schenectady and placed third overall.
McClay placed fourth overall in 16:18 on the 2.75-mile course, and Schafer placed 10th in 17:17. Dallas Cooley and Jordan Diska, both freshmen, finished in 17:21 and 17:23, respectively. Ashlyn Dalton won the junior varsity race, crossing the finish line in 18:10.
Even though several runners recorded personal best times, the ESM boys cross country team still lost its first dual meet of the season, 24-31, to Harborfields at Sunken Meadow on September 30. The Sharks are now 2-1 in League V.
Harborfields took the first two placements of the meet, then ESM’s Ryan Corbett came in third in 16:47, a personal best, followed by Dom DeAngelis at 17:12. Brandon Turbush placed sixth in a personal best time of 17:20.
All of ESM’s runners crossed the finish line in less than 18:00.
The Baymen (2-1 League VII) took care of Mercy, 20-37, at the Indian Island County Park in Riverhead on September 30. Nick Berglin won the race in 17:38, followed by his brother, Christian, in 18:03. Chris Downs and Dan Ruiz both crossed the finish line in 19:45 and Gary Tetrault took the last scoring placement (eighth) in 20:53.
Hampton Bays also competed at the St. Anthony’s Invitational at Sunken Meadow on Saturday where it placed 11th out of 17 teams. Nick Berglin finished 18th out of 139 runners in 17:55.89 while Christian Berglin finished 42nd in 18:47.66.
The Hampton Bays girls cross country team lost, 19-37, to Mercy at Indian Island on September 30. The Lady Monarchs took the first four placements before Cameron Heaney took fifth place in 24:45. Alyssa Ortiz placed sixth in 25:03 while Taylor Dunn finished seventh in 25:27. Christina Pasca crossed the finish line in eighth place in 26:23.
The Lady Baymen (1-2 League VII) also went to the St. Anthony’s Invitational over the weekend. Heaney finished the 5K course at Sunken Meadow in a personal best 24:01. Erika Meindel finished in 26:57, Chloe Haynes finished in 27:06 and Stacey Lattimore clocked in at 28:53.
The Westhampton Beach girls cross country team swept the first five spots of its meet with Comsewogue en route to a 16-44 victory at Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays on September 30. As of Monday morning, the Lady Hurricanes sat at 3-0 and in a tie for first place with Harborfields atop the League V standings.
Jenny Jordan won last week’s meet in 22:23 while Reilly Gwinn finished second in 23:11 and Selah Vetter placed third in 24:40. Nora Murphy finished fourth in 24:41 and Bryanna Gristina clocked in at 24:44 to finish fifth.
The Westhampton Beach boys cross country team also won its meet last week, 26-29, at Red Creek Park on September 30. Individual times were not provided.
The Hurricanes are 2-1 in League VI.
