Breast Cancer Awareness Brings On A Month’s Worth Of Events

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Southampton Hospital and the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at the hospital have planned a number of events to increase awareness and raise funds to support local breast cancer survivors.

For the month of October, Sabrosa Mexican Grill in Water Mill will donate the total bill amount for the 100th customer each day to the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at the hospital. Deborah Thompson Day Spa in Montauk will donate 10 percent from all treatments during the month of October to the coalition. In addition, 100 percent of sales from the pink ribbon bagel at Panera Bread in Hampton Bays will benefit local breast cancer awareness organizations, including the coalition at the hospital. Look Good, Feel Better, a free program that will offer beauty techniques to women who are actively undergoing cancer treatments, will be held on Tuesday, October 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Hampton Bays Library on Ponquogue Avenue.

The Shelter Island 5K Run/Walk to benefit the North Fork Breast Health Coalition and the Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Southampton Hospital will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 11 a.m. The walk/run will begin at Crescent Beach. The registration fee prior to Thursday, October 16, is $25 or $10 for kids age 14 and under. The fee to register the day of the event is $35. Visit www.shelterislandrun.com/5k for more information.

The annual Birdhouse Auction will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 6 p.m. at the Southampton Social Club on Elm Street. Visitors can view birdhouses designed by local artists and add a few to their collections. Advance tickets are $25 and $30 the day of the event. Calypso St. Barth in East Hampton will donate a percentage of sales to Lucia’s Angels on Thursday, October 23, between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m.

Free makeovers for breast cancer survivors will be held on Friday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Macy’s on West Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays. Breast cancer awareness events will continue into the month of November with a health fair on Friday, November 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Most Holy Trinity Church in East Hampton. The fair will offer free clinical breast examinations, pap smears and mammograms to those without insurance. Call (631) 726-8715.

A “Chicks with Sticks” yarn and craft sale will be held on Saturday, November 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Parrish Memorial Hall on the corner of Herrick Road and Lewis Street in Southampton.
