East Hampton Swimmers Rise To Challenges

Athletes on the East Hampton girls swim team faced a number of challenges last week in meets with Huntington and Sayville/Bayport-Blue Point, and head coach Craig Brierley was happy with the way they responded, and hopes the lessons learned will pay dividends for the team going forward.

In a meet at the East Hampton YMCA against Huntington on October 7, Brierley challenged his swimmers by putting some in events they are not accustomed to and also by asking some to swim more than they usually do. Despite those changes, East Hampton still came away with a win, beating the Lady Blue Devils, 89-73.

Isabella Swanson won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:27.87, qualifying for the county meet with that time, which was a personal best. Amanda Calabrese finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:05.76, also qualifying for counties. Her teammate, Carly Drew, won the race in 1:01.74

East Hampton swept all three relays, with Cecilia DeHavenon, Vanessa Betancur, Calabrese and Madison Jones teaming up in the 200 medley relay (2:05:01); Lilah Minetree, Diana Winthrop, Swanson, and Drew winning the 200 free relay (1:49.99); and Jones, Drew, Minetree and Georgi Bogetti winning the 400 free relay (3:57.52).

Minetree won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:11.27 and the 100 free in 1:00.21; Jones won the 50 free (26.41 seconds); Bogetti won the 500 free in 5:18.89; DeHavenon won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.51; and Calabrese won the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.57.

East Hampton took on a more formidable opponent in Sayville on Friday, one of the top three teams in the county, and had the added challenge of competing in Sayville’s 25-meter pool, as opposed to East Hampton’s 25-yard pool. The Lady Bonackers lost, 108-75, with Sayville earned 13 points for its diving team. (East Hampton does not have a diving contingent).

Bogetti won the 200 free in 2:17.53 and the 500 free in 4:45.24, while Drew won the 100 butterfly in 1:10.45. Jones won the 100 free in 1:04.37, and the 200-free relay team of Calabrese, Drew, Swanson and Minetree won in 2:00.38. The 200 medley relay team of DeHavenon, Drew, Jones and Minetree finished second in 2:13.31, with Sayville’s team winning in 2:13.10.

East Hampton will honor its seniors, Calabrese, Jenna Budd and Jasmine Flores, at its final home meet against Hauppauge on October 16.

ON THE SCHEDULE: Thursday, 10/16, vs. Hauppauge, 5 p.m.; Tuesday, 10/21, at West Babylon, 5 p.m.
