Just past the halfway point of the season, the Eastport South Manor boys soccer team had put itself in a position to earn a return to the postseason, needing to win three of its final six games to secure a spot.
However, from the time the team moved to 4-4 in League IV play until now, the squad has gone on a five-game losing streak, snuffing out any hope of playing into late October.
The Sharks fell to 4-9 with one game remaining in regular season play with a pair of losses during the past week. The chances for a postseason were officially negated when ESM lost to Kings Park, 2-1, on October 16 at home. The squad followed it up with a 4-0 loss at Hauppauge on Monday.
The Sharks were scheduled to wrap up their season at home against Bellport on October 22.
In the game that officially knocked the squad out of the hunt for a playoff berth, Kings Park put two on the board, and those were the only two goals the Kingsmen needed to secure the victory. Ray Cirko scored on an assist by Mike Flynn in the waning minutes of the first half for a 2-1 halftime score, which later became the final score.
For the girls squad, the chance for a postseason bid is also going to have to wait till next year, as the Lady Sharks fell to 2-9-2 in League IV play following two more losses. ESM fell to Huntington, 2-0, on the road on October 15, and then lost to Deer Park, 4-3, two days later at home.
Against Deer Park, the Lady Falcons scored three unanswered goals in the second half to snap a 1-1 halftime tie, going up 4-1. ESM scored twice during the final 10 minutes but couldn’t manage to even things up, tallying the ninth loss of the season.
Kaeli Huff, Corie Hack and Nijay Brown all scored for the Lady Sharks.
ESM was scheduled to travel to West Babylon on October 21 for the final game of the season.
