New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele recently announced that The Retreat, Inc. and Brighter Tomorrow’s, Inc. both received a grant of $75,250 each from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services via the Federal Family Violence Prevention and Services Act. These two local organizations were among 56 prevention programs that received a portion of the $4.3 million awarded throughout the state. The Federal Family Violence Prevention and Services Act supports the establishment, maintenance and expansion of programs to prevent domestic violence.

The New York State Office of Children and Family Services used a competitive request for proposals to allocate the funds. Applicants were required to demonstrate in their proposals how the funds would support the prevention of incidences of family violence. In addition, they had to outline plans for immediate shelter, support services and access to community-based programs for victims of domestic violence and their children. Proposals also had to include specialized services for children, undeserved populations and minorities who experience domestic violence.
