For a good portion of the second half, it looked like the third-seeded Hampton Bays boys soccer team might pull off an upset of no. 2 Center Moriches under the lights on the Red Devils’ field on Wednesday, October 29, in the Suffolk County Class B semifinals. The Baymen were leading, 2-1, after a goal from Jack Seabury off a cross from Oscar Murillo with 34:21 left to play. But with 21:57 left to play, Red Devil Kevin Albert tied it off a cross from Anthony Parlato, and then Dan Franchi scored the winner with 16:57 left, knocking the ball in off a rebound.
Center Moriches opened the scoring with 35:26 left in the first half off a goal from Eric Amaya, assisted by Albert, but the Baymen tied it off a direct kick by Nick Lemorrocco with 2:28 left in the first half.
Hampton Bays pushed hard in the final minutes of the game, with Murillo shooting the ball just wide right with less than three minutes to play.
Hampton Bays head coach John Paga was happy with his team’s effort, although he admitted it was a tough loss to take.
“The team played as hard as they possibly could have,” he said. “They left it all out on the field. I couldn’t be prouder. We had a couple bad breaks and some miscommunication that sealed our fate. It was a cruel ending to a great season.
“We lost a great game to an excellent team,” he continued. “No regrets.”
Center Moriches lost to defending county champion Mattituck in the county final at Diamond in the Pines in Coram on Saturday. Mattituck beat no. 4 Southampton, 3-0, in the other semifinal earlier in the day. It marked the fifth year in a row that Mattituck won the county championship.
