The Westhampton Beach girls volleyball team took care of Eastport South Manor, 3-0, at home on Friday evening in the Suffolk County Class A quarterfinals. The victory pushed the Lady Hurricanes through to the semifinals, where they will host the winner of the Sayville/Hauppauge quarterfinal match this Monday at 4 p.m. There will be a $6 admission to the match.
Westhampton Beach, the second seed in Class A, had defeated seventh-seeded ESM, 3-1, at home back on September 15, and Friday’s match wasn’t much different. The Lady Hurricanes held the lead for the majority of game one, which they wound up winning, 25-15.
ESM got off to a hot start in the second game, thanks to some strong serving, but its 9-2 lead quickly diminished. Following a timeout by Westhampton Beach, the Lady Sharks committed five straight unforced errors, allowing the Lady Canes to go on a 9-0 run, which gave them the lead for good. They wound up taking the second game 25-22.
In game three, Westhampton Beach went on two 6-0 runs—the first gave it an 11-6 lead, the second an 18-11 lead—and the Lady Canes wound up taking the game, 25-19, to seal up the victory.
Sarena Choi had seven kills to go along with 10 digs for Westhampton Beach while Sarah Culver had six kills and 17 digs. Maddie Neuberger finished with five kills, Shea Casey had 14 assists and Arianna Brierton recorded 12 digs. The Lady Canes totaled nine blocks overall.
Gabbi Giammarino had 20 assists and three blocks for ESM while Kristen Bohnenblusch and Jessica Edwards each had 10 kills.
