Westhampton Beach Qualifies At Least Four For County Golf Tournament; Sharks Win League Title Outright

Westhampton Beach boys golf head coach Fred Musumeci was hoping that at least four of his players would qualify for the Section XI Championships by placing in the top 20 at the League VIII Qualifying Tournament on Thursday, October 30, at Rock Hill Golf and Country Club in Manorville. He may have gotten his wish.

Bobby Joyce and Will Reed, who both shot 90s on the par 72 course at Rock Hill, along with Harrison Aponte, who shot a 92, all qualified for the county tournament, which is played in the spring. Thatcher Cord finished the tournament in a three-way tie for the final two qualifying spots of the tourney, so there was a playoff for it, which he lost. Since he finished 21st, though, Cord is considered the first alternate and should have a good shot at appearing at counties, according to Musumeci.

“If one person can’t go, he’s the first one in, and there’s usually a lot of kids who play another sport in the spring, so a lot of kids drop out of the tournament,” he explained. “I was hoping to get four in and we’ll probably get four in.”

Musumeci wanted to thank the Westhampton Country Club for allowing the team to continue to use its course throughout the fall months. It’s a partnership that has lasted over 15 years now and one Musumeci hopes will continue. “I want to thank the members there for having us and making it a great experience for the kids,” he said.

ESM Takes Regular Season Title

The Sharks defeated Mattituck, 6-3, at Hampton Hills Golf and Country Club in Westhampton Beach on October 29 to secure sole possession of the League VII regular-season title. The match was previously scheduled to be played a week earlier, but thunderstorms ended the match early and forced it to be rescheduled.

It’s the first time since 2012 that ESM has won the league title outright, having shared the league title with Mattituck last season. The Sharks finished this season 12-0 and went 64-8 in head-to-head matches this season. And they have won 18 straight matches dating back to last season.

Kyle Tillinghast led ESM last week by shooting a 4-over 39 on the front nine at Hampton Hills. He finished the season 12-0 in head-to-head matches. Joey Busiello, who won the League VII Qualifying Tournament last week, shot a 42 and Conner Mantel won his match with a 45. Mantel finished the season 11-0. ESM beat Mattituck by one stroke in team total, 217-218.

“Both teams were definitely into the match. It was the most pressured match of the season,” ESM head coach Todd Skala said. “We had some days some sit on it and think about it. I think that took some pressure off of what was a pretty intense match. The greens were real tricky that day for both teams.”
