The students in Stephanie Neill’s seventh and eighth grade English classes have submitted essays for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen essay contest, which each year draws essays from more than 100,000 students in grades six through eight. The first-place winner from each state competes to win one of 46 national awards totaling $46,000. The contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on this year’s patriotic theme “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans.”
