The driver of the vehicle that killed one man and critically injured another has been identified by Town Police.
Edward Allen, 40, of Riverhead struck two pedestrians just after 8 p.m. on Flanders Road near McDonald’s, according to Town Police Chief Robert Pearce. The accident is still being investigated, and no charges have been filed against Mr. Allen.
The deceased victim did not have identification, so Chief Pearce said police will need to do a fingerprint analysis to identify him. The identity of the other victim, who was still listed in critical condition on Monday morning, was being withheld until police could contact family members.
A man driving southbound on Flanders Road hit two men crossing the street near Vail Avenue Sunday night, killing one pedestrian and sending the other to Stony Brook Hospital in critical condition, according to Southampton Town Police.
Police did not arrest the driver, noting that they did not find any evidence of a crime during the initial investigation.
Authorities have not identified any of the three men involved in Sunday night’s accident, which closed a portion of Flanders Road from 8 p.m. until about 11 p.m.
Flanders Road is closed in both directions pending the investigation from the traffic circle to Vail Avenue and drivers are asked to use alternative routes.
