A Westhampton Beach man was charged with DWI after authorities said he collided with another vehicle, which had a toddler as a passenger, in Speonk on Saturday night and then attempted to flee on foot from responding officers.
Southampton Town Police said 39-year-old Carlos Antonio Perez was traveling east on Montauk Highway in Speonk at around 8:40 p.m. when he sideswiped another vehicle that was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Old Montauk Highway. Police said Mr. Perez’s car then skidded off the road and into the woods.
Mr. Perez, who suffered minor injuries in the accident, tried to push his way past responding officers after they found an open bottle of alcohol inside his vehicle, according to police. A “brief scuffle” ensued before officers were able to take him into custody.
The family in the other vehicle did not suffer any injuries, police said.
In addition to DWI, Mr. Perez was charged with resisting arrest and unlicensed operation of a vehicle, also misdemeanors. He was also ticketed for having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, and for other minor traffic violations.
Mr. Perez was held overnight and arraigned the next morning in Southampton Town Justice Court. Bail was set at $1,500 cash bail and, as of earlier this week, he is still being held at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside, according to authorities.
