A man was arrested on Friday night after he drove his car through the front of the 7-Eleven convenience store in East Quogue.
The crash happened about 8:45 p.m. Witnesses say a Range Rover that had either been parked or was entering a parking spot in the front of the store suddenly lurched forward and smashed through the glass front entrance to the building, sending a shower of glass into the store.
“Instead of hitting the brake, he hit the gas I guess and went right through the windows,” store manager Tolga Batumoglu said on Saturday morning.
Southampton Town Police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was arrested for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
There were no injuries reported and the store remained open for business on Saturday. A similar incident happened at the same store four years ago, Mr. Batumoglu said.
“Luckily, nobody was hurt—we were very lucky,” the store manager said. “One of our employees was right in front of the windows a minute earlier. There was a magazine stand in front of the windows, she was organizing it and she stood up to go help a customer at the counter and [the car] came through the window. A moment earlier and she could have been hurt very badly.”
