One Flown To Hospital Following Motorcycle Crash In Westhampton Saturday

A motorcyclist was airlifted to a local hospital after he lost control of his bike and sideswiped a car in Westhampton on Saturday afternoon.

George Demetriades, 43, of Riverhead suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his leg but was still flown, via medevac, to Stony Brook University Hospital following the accident, which occurred at around 12:30 p.m., according to Southampton Town Police.

Authorities later charged Mr. Demetriades with reckless driving and driving without insurance, both misdemeanors, and also ticketed him for speeding, driving without a proper license plate and making an unsafe lane change, all violations. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Southampton Town Justice Court at a later date.

Police said Mr. Demetriades was traveling west when he sideswiped a 2011 Toyota Camry being driven by Joseph Marletta of East Moriches, who was heading in the opposite direction. Police did not provide an age for Mr. Marletta.

The accident forced the closure of Montauk Highway between Summit Boulevard and Seabreeze Avenue for approximately an hour, according to police.

The Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance and the Westhampton Beach Fire Department both responded to the scene.
