A driver who fell asleep behind the wheel took down a utility pole on Flanders Road on Sunday afternoon, forcing the highway’s closure for more than seven hours.
Twenty-year-old Amber Brewer of Flanders, who was not ticketed by authorities, suffered minor injuries in the single-car accident, which occurred at around 4 p.m., according to Southampton Town Police. She was taken by Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for the treatment of undisclosed injuries, police said.
Authorities said Ms. Brewer, who was driving a blue sedan, was heading south on Flanders Road when she veered right and struck a utility pole along the south side of highway, cracking the pole and causing it to fall across the roadway.
The accident forced the closure of both directions of Flanders Road, from Woodroad Trail to Evergreen Road, until just after 11 p.m. Sunday as crews worked to remove the pole.
Representatives of PSEG were on the scene briefly to inspect wires in the area. Police said no nearby homes lost power due to the accident.
The Flanders Fire Department responded as well.
