Police Investigating Murder-Suicide Of Native Bridgehampton Man And Wife In Mastic Beach

A Southampton Hospital employee was murdered by her husband, a Bridgehampton native who then took his own life, in their Mastic Beach home on Thursday, April 30, according to Suffolk County Police.

The couple were found dead in their home on Woodside Drive in Mastic Beach, police said, after four of the family’s six children came home from school and were locked out, prompting them to find an adult to help. The man walked the children back to the home and peered in the window, saw Wayne Street, 29, dead on the floor, and called the police at approximately 4:40 p.m.

According to police, Mr. Street used a handgun to murder his wife, Jenni Lee Street, 28, before using the gun on himself. Two of the six children who were under the age of 2 were in the house at the time but were not harmed.

According to a Suffolk County Police public information officer, all six children were transported to a local hospital, where they were interviewed by Child Protective Services. All six have been since been released to the care of family members.

Early Wednesday morning, the house on Woodside Drive was seriously damaged in an early-morning fire that engulfed the home. Suffolk County Police were able to confirm the house fire is being investigated, though no other information was available as of Wednesday morning.

Mr. Street had in the past faced criminal charges in connection with multiple altercations on the East End, including a brawl in June 2009 in Montauk that injured three police officers, two of whom are still on disability.

Southampton Hospital Director of Marketing and Public Affairs Marsha Kenny confirmed that Ms. Street was an employee of the hospital, but declined to say in what capacity.
