Mission accomplished.

The East Hampton boys tennis team defeated second-place William Floyd in a 4-3 match on Monday to clinch the League VIII regular season title with an undefeated record.

The win also secured a spot in the Suffolk County (Section XI) Team Tournament for the Bonackers, which will begin on Wednesday, May 13.

Head coach Katie Helfand said she wasn’t entirely sure when the last time was that East Hampton won a league title, but believed it was 2004.

Throughout the season, East Hampton (12-0, 13-0 overall) and Floyd (10-2, 10-5) were clearly a cut above the rest of the teams in the league, and their only true competition came against each other. Both teams enjoyed easy wins over the rest of the squads in the league—Southold/Greenport, Eastport South Manor, Center Moriches, Riverhead and Hampton Bays. The Bonackers defeated Floyd in a close 4-3 match in their first meeting back on April 25, in Mastic Beach, and turned the trick again in East Hampton on Monday.

The first doubles team of Harrison Kennedy and Zach Bogetti, who are undefeated, were the deciding point on Monday. They beat Peter Rasmussen and Bryan Ruales, 7-5, 6-2. Floyd won the other two doubles matches in straight sets, and East Hampton took the top three singles matches. At first singles, Julian MacGurn beat Ray Jiang, 6-1, 6-2; at second singles, Jack Louchheim beat Kevin Jiang, 6-0, 6-0; and at third singles, Ravi MacGurn beat Chris Robertson, 6-2, 6-2.

Before the win over Floyd, East Hampton cruised to a 6-1 win over Southold on April 29, beat Southampton by the same score in a non-league home match the following day, and shut out Hampton Bays, 7-0, at home on May 1. Against Hampton Bays, MacGurn, Louchheim, MacGurn and Thomas Lawton won in straight sets at first through fourth doubles, giving up a total of just two points. Ben Karlin and Jordan Foster cruised to an easy win at first doubles, and Hampton Bays forfeited at second and third doubles. Against Southampton, MacGurn, Louchheim and MacGurn won easily in straight sets and Lawton earned a forfeit. The first doubles team of Bogetti and Kennedy outlasted Justin Hatix and Ben Stiedele in three sets at first doubles (6-1, 2-6, 6-3), while Matty McMullan and Josh Rosario beat Alex Prae and Joe Guilli, 6-4, 6-4, at second doubles. Mariners Liam McMahon and Rich Ruhling beat East Hampton’s Parker Fenelon and Karlin, in three sets (0-6, 6-4, 6-3). Against Southold, MacGurn, Louchheim and MacGurn won in straight sets at first through third singles, while Foster won in a super tiebreaker at fourth singles. Bogetti and Kennedy won in straight sets at first doubles, as did Rosario and McMullan at second. Lawton and Hunter Medler lost in a super tiebreaker at third doubles.

The Suffolk County team tournament will begin on May 13 at the higher seed’s home court. Before the team tournament, East Hampton will send several players to the Division IV individual tournament, which is slated to start on Friday, May 8, at William Floyd High School at 9 a.m. and will run through Monday, May 11. The top four singles players and top four doubles team will advance to the county individual tournament, which will also be held at Floyd this year, on May 16 and 18. The top three singles players and top three doubles teams from that tournament advance to states.
