East Hampton junior Julian MacGurn will represent his team at the upcoming Suffolk County Individual Tournament after finishing second at the Division IV boys tennis tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to top-seed Chris Kuhnle of Shoreham at William Floyd High School on Monday.
MacGurn, seeded second, made his way to the final rather easily, beating Southampton’s Shane Terry (6-1, 6-1), Rocky Point’s Kevin Kucharczyk (6-2, 6-2), Shoreham’s Doug DeMaio (6-2, 6-1), and Ross’s Dan Okin (6-1, 6-4).
By finishing in the top four, MacGurn earned his spot at counties, which will take place back at Floyd on Saturday, May 16, at 9 a.m. and continues on Monday, May 18, at 2 p.m.
In the doubles draw, the Westhampton Beach team of Sam Santora and Raj Ghayalod, seeded first, took third place to secure their spot at counties, beating third-seeded Peter Rasmussen and Bryan Ruales of Floyd, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5, in the consolation match. Ghayalod and Santora had a first-round bye, then beat Kai Sladek-Mohard and Nick Christoff of Longwood (6-0, 6-0) and Dawson Kropp and Desmond Scott of Floyd (7-5, 6-2), before losing, 7-5, 6-2, to Ross’s Madison Hummel and Aaron Kresberg, the fourth-seeded team.
Several other East Hampton and Westhampton Beach players competed in the singles and doubles draw, but did not advance to the counties.
In singles, Bonac seventh-grader Jack Louchheim lost a tough first-round match, falling, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1), to Gonzalo Trapote of Ross, while eighth-grader Ravi MacGurn lost, 6-1, 6-2, to Jonah Feurring of Ross in the first round. Riley Smith of Westhampton Beach, seeded sixth, beat Brad Maslak of Longwood, 6-4, 6-4, then beat Nate Hanley of Rocky Point, 6-0, 6-0, before losing, 6-1, 6-1, to Okin. Westhampton Beach’s Andrew Hempel lost in the first round, falling 6-1, 6-2, to Mike Koscinski of Center Moriches.
In doubles, East Hampton’s Zach Bogetti and Harrison Kennedy, seeded fifth, had a first-round bye before beating Nick Lange and Matt Epp of Shoreham, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). They lost, 6-4, 6-3, in the next round to Hummel and Kresberg. East Hampton’s Matty McMullan and Josh Rosario lost in the first round, 7-5, 6-3, to Josh Hassildine and Chris Moichane of Mattituck.
Westhampton Beach’s Will Nadal and Peter Marotta beat Kevin Filetto and Joe Carmarda of Eastport South Manor, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round before losing, 6-4, 6-2, to Hummel and Kresberg. Hurricanes Owen Williams and Christian Prag had a first-round bye before beating Tom Jurgielwicz and Tom Westphalen of ESM, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. They lost, 6-0, 7-5, to Rasmussen and Ruales after that.
The Southampton doubles team of Justin Hatix and Brian Stiedele beat Austin Gao and Matt Wells in the first round (score unavailable), before losing, 6-1, 6-3, to Matt Covati and Wade Mendourne of Longwood. Southampton’s singles players, Will Riddick and Shane Terry, both lost in the first round. Southampton’s top singles player, Christian Oakley, missed most of the season with a knee injury.
East Hampton came into the tournament on a high note, beating League VII co-champion Ross, 5-2, at home on May 6 in a non-league match to cap an undefeated season at 14-0 overall, 12-0 in League VIII. Julian MacGurn beat Dan Okin, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3, at first singles, and Jack Louchheim beat Jonas Feurring, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, at second singles. East Hampton swept the doubles matches, with Bogetti and Kennedy winning, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, at first; Jordan Foster and Matty McMullan winning, 7-5, 6-0, at second, and Ben Karlin and Josh Rosario winning, 6-0, 7-5, at third.
East Hampton earned the 12th seed in the 24-team Suffolk County Tournament, which was set to begin on May 13. East Hampton was slated to host no. 21 West Islip at home at 4 p.m., and if the Bonackers win, they will play Thursday, May 14, at no. 5 Bayport/Blue Point.
