The Pierson girls basketball team had mixed results in two games last week, losing 33-32 at Shoreham/Wading River in a non-league game on December 2 before beating /Rocky Point, 31-18, in another non-league road game on Saturday.
Head coach Kevin Barron was happy with his team’s effort against a quality Shoreham team. Nia Dawson scored to tie the game in the final minute, but Shoreham scored on an offensive putback to take the lead for good. Dawson finished with six points, while Erica Selyukova had eight points, Katie Kneeland had eight points and seven rebounds, and Lily Kot had eight points and six rebounds.
“Shoreham is tough and we played outstanding defense against them the entire game,” Barron said. “The only thing that held us back were the turnovers. We gave them way too many opportunities to capitalize on our mistakes and you can’t do that in any game and expect to win.”
Turnovers were an issue again against Rocky Point, but the Lady Whalers managed to pull away against the weaker team. Barron said his team played better in the second half. Alyssa Kneeland came off the bench and played well in the second half, finishing with six points and four rebounds. Her cousin, Katie Kneeland, had 14 points and five rebounds to lead all scorers, while Dawson added four assists and five steals.
Pierson was scheduled to host East Hampton in a non-league game on Friday at 7 p.m. and will host Sayville in another non-league game on December 18 at 4:30 p.m.
