It’s June, the moon is full and the tide is high. The timing is just right for a lot of horseshoe crab love-making, and a little scientific research—at least that’s the hope. But with temperatures in the low 50s, a bitter wind, cloudy skies and a light rain falling, a recent Tuesday night’s conditions proved to be less than ideal for the prehistoric species to mate. Still, that did not stop a few hundred of the dome-shelled crustaceans from coming ashore to lay and fertilize eggs. Nor did it stop volunteers from gathering on the bay side of Pikes Beach in the Village of West Hampton Dunes to tag and measure them.
