Howard (Hassan) L. Eleazer of Zebulon, North Carolina, formerly of Southampton, died on December 3 in North Carolina. He was 59.
Raised in Southampton where he was born on December 8, 1955, he was the eldest son of Robert L. Eleazer and Sophia Seymore Eleazer. Survivors said he was known for his sharp wit and loving heart.
He earned a high school equivalency diploma and in the mid-1990s, he made the hajj to Mecca. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology and worked as a community drug and alcohol counselor. In May 2015, he was awarded a master’s degree in social work from North Carolina State University.
Mr. Eleazer is survived by his wife, Attica DeLoatch-Eleazer; former spouses, Tallibah James and Cassandra Daniels; children, Shariah Eleazer, Mahasin Eleazer-Phillips, April Lee, Yusuf Eleazer, Saffiyah Eleazer, Halima Eleazer, Medina Eleazer, Antwon Rather, Ajean DeLoatch, Aaron Rather and Anthony DeLoatch; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Jerome Watkins; sisters, Barbara Bowen and Patricia Eleazer; sisters-in-law, Heike Eleazer and Ithaca Lawrence; brothers-in-law, Wayne Bowen, Harold Moon and Tony Lawrence; father, Robert Eleazer Sr.; aunt, Virginia Britton; great-aunt, Catherine Simmons; 16 nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins and relatives. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Eleazer Jr.
Funeral services were in North Carolina at the Islamic Association of Raleigh on December 5.
