The Southampton wrestling team lost its first League VII dual meet of the season, 64-18, at Port Jefferson on December 9.
Southampton head coach Lester Ware had said that his team was going struggle early on to fill in at different weights and that was the case in last week’s match. The Mariners forfeited five different weight classes, which gave Port Jeff 30 points. Of the nine matches there were contested, Southampton won three of them. Selvin Chubmaquin (152 pounds), coming off his impressive performance at the Herricks Tournament, won a 12-10 decision over Matt Murphy. Jack O’Brien (182 pounds) pinned Ryan Walsh in 2:22, and Ivan Ochoa (285) won a 4-1 decision over Nick Kafeiti. Matt Wooley was also awarded a win by forfeit at 220 pounds.
Southampton also competed at the Sprig Gardner Tournament at East Hampton on Saturday. Reagan Soledad was the top wrestler for the Mariners, placing third at 220 pounds. He won all of his matches by pin, and his lone loss was to defending state champion Christine Araneo of Ward Melville, who went on to win the weight class and was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
