To celebrate the highly anticipated release of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the eighth book in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Southampton Books in Southampton Village is hosting a midnight release party on Saturday, July 30, with festivities beginning at 11 p.m.
Southampton Books, located at 16 Hampton Road, is the only independent bookstore on the East End that will have a release party for the book. The Harry Potter-themed night will feature raffles, giveaways and Harry Potter trivia for eager fans of all ages to enjoy. Readers can pre-order a hardcover copy of the book on the bookstore’s website, southampton-books.com, and pick it up at the midnight release or anytime after that.
“All Harry Potter merchandise will be in stock and there will be a few other surprises,” Southampton Books co-owner Daniel Hirsch said.
If the release party is anything like the midnight screening at the United Artists Southampton Theatre of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part 2,” the last film in the series, it should be a big success. More than 600 fans of the franchise attended the screening in 2011 sporting wizard cloaks and wands.
Not only is “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” being released nine years after the last book, it picks up 19 years after the final battle between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. These time gaps aren’t the only differences setting this book apart from the others. This is the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage, premiering on London’s West End on July 30. The book is the official script book of the play, and “based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne,” instead of following the series’ traditional format and authorship.
