Four people were transported to Southampton Hospital Tuesday following a two-car accident that had Montauk Highway in Shinnecock Hills closed for 45 minutes, according to Southampton Fire Department 1st Assistant Chief Chris Brenner.
The department was called at 3:12 p.m. to a car fire caused by the accident, but responding Southampton Town Police officers had already extinguished the flames.
Meanwhile, Southampton Volunteer Ambulance and Southampton Village Ambulance crews transported the people who were injured to the hospital. The injuries were non-life-threatening, police said. Crews from the Bridgehampton Fire Department Ambulance and Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance companies stood by.
Fire police had shut down Montauk Highway at Peconic Road and Tuckahoe Road and diverted traffic around the scene, Chief Brenner said. The road was opened again after debris was cleared. Four ambulances were requested, and a request for a medevac helicopter was canceled by ambulance personnel, according to Chief Brenner.
