The person who died in Monday night’s crash was identified by police Tuesday morning as James Sager, 57, of Babylon.
Mr. Sager was driving westbound on Flanders Road and veered into the eastbound lane, explained Lt. Ralph. He sideswiped four cars and hit a fifth car head on, she said. The female driver of the fifth car was flown via medevac helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital and was listed in stable condition. There were no other reported injuries, according to police.
It was not immediately clear why Mr. Sager was driving in the wrong lane.
Police are still investigating the accident scene, which spanned about a quarter-mile of road.
The road was reopened at 2:07 a.m.
At least one other person was injured in the accident, which occurred near Fireman’s Memorial Park, and is being flown via medevac helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, according to Lt. Ralph.
The stretch of Flanders Road between Longneck Boulevard and Pleasure Drive South remains closed as of 9:45 p.m.
At least one person died in a multi-vehicle accident on Flanders Road in Flanders on Monday night, according to Southampton Town Police.
Several vehicles were involved in the crash that forced the closure of both lanes of Flanders Road shortly after 8 p.m., according Lieutenant Susan Ralph. The accident occurred near the USA gas station.
Authorities were still responding to the scene and could not immediately provide any additional information about the victim, the number of vehicles involved, or the number of people injured.
Police are investigating the scene.
