Eastbound traffic on both Sunrise and Montauk highways moved at a snail’s pace Thursday morning, June 4, due to a downed telephone pole caused by a one-car accident on County Road 39 in Southampton, according to Southampton Town Police.
Traffic was backed up from Southampton to as far west as East Quogue.
The one-car accident, which police said was not serious, took place near the Hess gas station on County Road 39. The driver hit a telephone pole just to the west of Tuckahoe Lane, causing the wires to land on the pavement below. One eastbound lane on County Road 39 was closed to traffic for several hours as crews worked on repairing the utility pole.
A spokeswoman for the Long Island Power Authority said the damaged pole belongs to the telephone company. She reported no power outages in the area.
