A Patchogue man was arrested last week after Southampton Town Police said he struck several County Road 39 storefronts in Southampton numerous times with a paintball gun on drive-bys over several weeks for his own amusement.
Terrance M. Wahl, 36, was taken into custody at about 5:55 p.m. on April 22 on Sunrise Highway near Flanders Road in Hampton Bays, after the owner of Shinnecock Hardware, one of the businesses that had been struck by the colored paint capsules, alerted detectives to a Nissan Sentra that may have been involved in the crime, police said.
After being pulled over, Mr. Wahl was found to have a loaded paintball gun in his car, detectives said. He was charged with two counts of criminal tampering in the third degree, a misdemeanor. He told police that shooting the paintballs was his idea of fun, they said.
“Although no tangible damage or injuries were reported to police, some store owners spent hours cleaning the paint off the front of their stores,” police said in a statement.
In addition to Shinnecock Hardware, Kazdin Pools & Spas and Suburban Auto Services were among the businesses shot at “for no apparent reason,” authorities said.
Mr. Wahl was released after being issued appearance tickets to appear in Southampton Town Justice Court at a later date.
