Lady Sharks Lacrosse Is Hot Going Into Playoffs This Weekend

To say the Eastport South Manor girls lacrosse team is on fire would be an understatement.

The Lady Sharks finished the regular season last week on a nine-game winning streak, which dates back to April 19, and they are primed to defend their Suffolk County Class B title.

As hot as ESM (11-3 Division II, 12-3 overall, 162.13 power points) is though, Sayville earned the top seed in the Suffolk County Class B bracket after finishing the season 12-2 in Division II, 14-4 overall, with 168.84 power points. On Sunday, ESM head coach Becky Thorn was sure her team would be hosting Comsewogue (7-7 Division II, 9-7 overall, 103.38), the seventh and final seed in the bracket, on Saturday at 12 p.m.

ESM continued its winning ways last week with a 9-7 victory at Harborfields on Friday, after beating Miller Place 11-8 on the road on May 7.

The Lady Sharks held at least a two-goal lead throughout the game against Harborfields last week. The Lady Tornadoes made a push toward the end of the game when they scored four consecutive goals, but ESM had too big of a lead for Harborfields to overcome. Dakota Mason scored three goals for ESM while Jackie Wasilko scored two. Samantha Giacolone made 11 saves in goal.

Miller Place proved to be a tough opponent for ESM, which only had a 6-5 lead at halftime. The Lady Sharks made a number of unforced turnovers in the first half and it led to a closer game than Thorn would have liked. Once ESM built up a big enough lead in the second half, it just stalled in the final minutes of the game to get out with a victory. Miller Place was eliminated from playoff contention with losses to ESM and Shoreham/Wading River last week.

Mason scored five goals while Kaeli Huff and Kristen Anderson scored two goals each. Rebecca Tooker won three draws and picked up five crucial groundballs. Thorn called Tooker her most consistent player and always puts her on the opposing team’s top player. Earlier this season, Tooker shadowed Babylon’s Shelby Fredericks, one of the top players on Long Island, and limited her to just two goals and one assist.
Sharks Lose At Huntington
The ESM boys lacrosse team lost its lone game last week, 12-11, at Huntington on Thursday, May 9. Bill Martin scored with one second remaining on the clock in regulation to give the Blue Devils the victory. Tyler Weiss scored four goals in the loss while Mike Bianco and Matt Prokesch scored two goals each.

Even with the loss, the Sharks received the fourth seed in the Class B playoffs and will host fifth-seeded Miller Place on Friday at 4 p.m. ESM lost 9-4 at home to the Panthers but that was back on March 27.
