The Eastport South Manor girls track team had a number of solid finishes at the Freshman/Sophomore Championships held at Longwood High School on May 14.
Taylor McClay took first place in the freshman 800-meter race, crossing the tape in 2:22.69, six seconds better than the runner-up. Ashley Schafer ran a personal best 8:03 in the 2,000-meter steeplechase while Taylor Madlinger finished the 1,500-meter race walk in a personal best 8:35.
And the 4×800-meter relay team of Schafer, McClay, Alex DeCicco and Ashlyn Dalton placed third in 10:28. DeCicco ran a great leg, bumping up the Lady Sharks from 10th all the way to second.
The Lady Sharks will have a number of girls at this week’s Division Championships, which began on Monday and concluded on Wednesday at Connetquot High School. Those results will appear in next week’s issue.
McClay competed in the 1,500-meter race and DeCicco entered the 800- and 1,500-meter races. Schafer competed in the 3,000-meter and 2,000-meter steeplechase, as did Betsy Spellman. Madlinger entered the 1,500-meter race walk, while Marisa Mazzoni competed in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and Rachel Pfeiffer was in the high jump.
Hope Boulliane, Shannon Ryan, Alex Connors and Ngarie Ross made up the 4×100-meter relay team. Mazzoni, Lisa Marone, Kate Happe and Brittany Castoro comprised the 4×400-meter relay squad, and McClay, DeCicco, Schafer and Dalton made up the 4×800-meter relay team.
The ESM boys track team had a small contingent of athletes compete in the Freshman/Sophomore Championships at Longwood on May 15.
Luke Lafferty won the freshman long jump with a 20-foot-2-inch leap. He also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 24.8 seconds. Aleks Cusumano placed third in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet 5 inches. And Ryan Corbett place fifth in the 3,200-meter race in 10:42.
Lafferty competed in the long jump at the Division Championships, which started Tuesday and will conclude today, Thursday, May 23, at Connetquot High School. His brother, Matt, competed in the high jump. Tom Meehan was entered in the 800- and 1,600-meter races.
Gary Murano was set to compete in the 3,200-meter race and Dave Laguerra was entered in the long jump and 400-meter dash. Dan Tapia was also running in the 400-meter dash. Ryan Flaherty competed in the 110-meter high hurdles, Jacob Black was entered in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and James Marone competed in the triple jump. Sean Clark was entered in the discus and John D’Amaro was in the shot put.
The Westhampton Beach girls track team did not attend the Freshman/Sophomore Championships last week, but had a number of girls compete in the Division Championships this week.
Stephanie Vickers competed in the 800- and 1,500-meter races and Lauren Lorefice was entered in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Annica Penn and Sabrina Mason both competed in the 1,500-meter race walk. Kira Kelly was in the high jump and Perla Moran was entered in the discus.
Lorefice, Nikki Haber, Mary Reid and Morgan Ford made up the 4×100-meter relay team and Vickers, Lorefice, Grace Gilbakian and Nora Murphy were entered in the 4×400-meter relay.
The Lady Baymen also skipped the Freshman/Sophomore Championships last week and instead prepared for this week’s Division Championships.
Shanna Heaney competed in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and the 800- and 1,500-meter races. Victoria Moynihan was entered in the 100-meter hurdles, discus and pole vault. Ariel Levine was also entered in the pole vault. Layla Deluca competed in the 100-meter dash and high jump. Mary Kelly Hilton was entered in the 200-meter dash and long jump while Hannah Reed was running in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and high jump.
Cameron Heaney competed in the 800-meter race and was also part of the 4×800-meter relay team. Shanna Heaney, Sarah Reed and Samantha Thompson were also on that squad. Catherine Konstantnopoulos, Drew Zaweski, Hilton and Deluca made up the 4×100 team and Reed, Thompson, Hannah Martinez and Sam Aube rounded out the 4×400 team.
