Police Investigating Link Between Missing Car And Drowning Victim

Southampton Town Police are investigating a link between a Southmapton man discovered drowned in a pool last month and a stolen car.

This week, police said they believe Lizandro Lopez, 30, who was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool at a Deerfield Road residence on June 19, was running away from the scene of a one-car accident on the same Water Mill block when he jumped a fence and landed in the pool.

According to Southampton Village police, the 1997 Toyota he was believed to have been driving had been stolen from the Southampton Hospital parking lot the night before, sometime between 2:30 and 9 p.m. It was discovered on June 18 crashed into a utility pole near where the body was eventually found. Just after 8 a.m. the next morning, police received a call from the homeowner reporting someone had drowned in his pool overnight.

Lieutenant James Kiernan said this week detectives are still looking for more information linking the two, including whether anyone else was in the car at the time of the accident.

Town detectives ask anyone with information to call 702-2230.
