Two men were arrested early last Thursday morning after assaulting another man with a closed folding knife, robbing him and leaving him bloodied in a bank parking lot in Hampton Bays—all for $30 each.
Mathew A. Caiaccia, 30, of Port Jefferson and Lester Dejon Pettaway, 21, of Brookhaven were apprehended by Southampton Town Police on Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays, shortly after authorities received an anonymous call at 4:22 a.m. on July 11 about an apparent fight in the parking lot of the Chase Bank on West Montauk Highway.
The victim, a 33-year-old Hampton Bays man, told police that he met the two men at Bub’s Tavern on West Montauk Highway and asked them for a ride to the ATM so he could withdraw money. Mr. Caiaccia and Mr. Pettaway agreed and drove the victim to the bank where he withdrew $60.
Mr. Caiaccia and Mr. Pettaway then allegedly proceeded to beat him with the butt end of the knife, causing multiple lacerations to the victim’s face and then attempted to escape in their car but were stopped a short time later, police said.
Both men were charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree assault, both felonies, as well as fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, according to police. They were arraigned last Thursday morning in Southampton Town Justice Court and both are being held on $50,000 bail.
Bail is set at the discretion of the court, Southampton Town Police Lieutenant James Kiernan said, but in this case the bails likely were set at a high level because the court “takes violent crimes very seriously.”
The two men are being held at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside, he added.
