Two girls were plucked from the Shinnecock Inlet on Monday evening by a passing boater who scooped them from the water and delivered them to dry land.
The girls, ages 12 and 15, were swimming in the ocean off of Road H in Hampton Bays when the current swept them into the inlet, Southampton Town Police Sergeant Howard Kalb said on Tuesday.
Town Police and the U.S. Coast Guard were notified that the girls were in the water, but they were safely transported to the docks at nearby Oakland’s Restaurant before either agency arrived on the scene, Sgt. Kalb said.
The girls were examined at Oakland’s but did not require medical attention.
Initial reports stated that a boat had overturned near the inlet and two people were in distress.
