Lady Baymen Christen New Courts With Victory Over Center Moriches

The changes keep rolling in for the Hampton Bays girls tennis team.

After Nathan Gaudreau took over the head coaching duties for Rodney Way earlier this year, the Lady Baymen were approved to use the brand new tennis courts at the Hampton Bays Elementary School just hours before their match against Center Moriches on Friday. Hampton Bays christened the new courts with a 5-2 win over the Lady Red Devils. The team had been playing at Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays for years before the switch to the new courts.

Friday’s victory was the first for the Lady Baymen (1-2 League VIII) this season and first under Gaudreau. Hampton Bays had lost a tightly contested 4-3 match to Shoreham/Wading River at Red Creek on September 11.

“I feel like these last couple of matches before we were a little tight,” Gaudreau said. “They seemed to be loosened up for this last match. They were able to beat them pretty handily. There’s no reason we couldn’t be 3-0 right now.”

As for the new courts, Gaudreau feels like it’s a positive step for the program.

“These courts are beautiful, but they’re not just new, they’re good, quality courts,” he said. “It’s a good morale boost for the girls and to know that they play for a school that cares about what kind of courts they play on.”

Hampton Bays took three of the four singles matches against Center Moriches. Lady Bayman Stefanie Blanco won at first singles 6-2, 6-1, over Lauryn Burridy. Magdalena Wrobel won 6-4, 6-0 over Erin Hovan at second singles, and at third singles, Ivana Ocampos won 6-1, 6-0, over Lauren Mims. Erin Tully lost at fourth singles 6-2, 6-0, to Caitlyn Burridy.

Alicia Golyski and Kassandra Phillips, the first doubles pair for Hampton Bays, won 6-2, 6-3, over Melonie Walsh and Sabrina Juzzillo. Christine Dubrowski and Gabriella LoBue won 6-2, 6-1 over Jesse Lawthardt and Kayla Friber at second doubles. And Gabrielle Vaillant and Katelyn Vizack of Center Moriches defeated Victoria Nicolova and Olivia Terry 6-2, 6-4 at third doubles.
