The Eastport South Manor boys volleyball team had the unlucky distinction of facing two of the best teams in Suffolk County last week in Sachem North and Sachem East.
The Sharks dropped both matches by 3-0 scores, losing at Sachem North on September 24 before falling to Sachem East at home last Thursday, September 26.
While not thrilled with the two losses that dropped his squad’s record to 1-4 on the season, ESM head coach Bruce Stiriz said he did learn a few more things about his team, information that could help him right the ship in the second half of the season.
“We’ve gotten something positive and constructive out of every match so far,” he said. “Nothing has been a negative in terms of getting better.
“We really could have competed better against these guys,” Stiriz added, referring to both Sachem teams. “We have all the pieces. I just don’t want them to identify with losing. Hopefully, in the second half, they can gain some confidence and turn things around.”
ESM lost, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-16 to Sachem North. Jon Suarez finished with nine kills while Tyler Brandow and Brian Mundell had eight each. Eric Ferrante racked up 24 assists.
The Sharks played a much more competitive match against Sachem East, but still fell in straight sets, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-22.
The Sharks competed in the Northport Tournament on Saturday. After defeating East Hampton in the opening round of the playoffs, ESM lost to Massapequa, the top-ranked Nassau County team, in the quarterfinals.
“We have to get to know each other and this tournament really helped us do that,” Stiriz said. “Hopefully, we can get some confidence … ”
The Westhampton Beach boys volleyball team fell to 1-5 on the season following a 3-0 home loss to Connetquot last Thursday, September 26. The Thunderbirds won, 25-15, 25-9 and 25-17.
