The Eastport South Manor boys soccer team was not able to come away with a victory last week, after playing to a 1-1 tie at home against Pierson on October 1 and then losing, 8-1, at Sayville on Thursday, October 3.
The non-league tie against Pierson last week was the Sharks’ third indecisive game of the season, the team having tied Islip 1-1 on September 27 and playing a scoreless game against Rocky Point on September 17. Jack Fitzpatrick put the Whalers up 1-0 in the first half, so the Sharks were chasing a one-goal deficit, until Mike Flynn scored from about 30 yards out with 20 minutes remaining in the game.
ESM head coach Peter Novellano had told his team at halftime it needed to start putting shots on goal so he didn’t mind that Flynn took a chance from that far out. “I told them that they couldn’t look for the perfect shot. I wanted them to put it into the box, maybe at least get a rebound,” he said. “Flynn took it in his own hands. He took the shot from a distance, which is fine.”
Each team had its chance to score in the two overtime periods, but neither could come away with a goal, resulting in the 1-1 tie. Thomas Biasetti made 12 saves in goal for ESM (1-4-2 League V, 1-6-3 overall), while Nick Stevens made nine saves for Pierson.
“It’s better than a loss, at this point,” Novellano said. “The guys are fighting to try and stay competitive in games. I’ll take a tie over a loss.”
ESM fell into a 3-0 hole just three minutes into the game at Sayville last week. Novellano said his team made simple breakdowns and it led to some easy goals for the Golden Flashes. Jacob Black scored the lone goal for ESM on a penalty kick in the second half. Sayville, as of Monday, was 7-0 in League V and 9-1-1 overall.
“They’re a great team,” Novellano said. “You expect them to finish their opportunities when they’re given and they absolutely did.”
The ESM girls soccer team didn’t fare any better in its game at Sayville on Saturday, losing 6-0. Sayville led 4-0 after the first half.
ESM fell to 2-5 in League V play, 3-7 overall.
