Sumner Braunstein of North Sea died on November 16. He was 86.
Mr. Braunstein was a lifelong learner and teacher, having graduated from Erasmus Hall High School, Brooklyn College and Columbia University. After a nearly 27-year career as a New York City public school teacher, he retired but continued to work as a writer, consultant, curriculum developer and teacher, including educating student teachers at Barnard College. Mr. Braunstein found great pleasure in the natural beauty and sense of community found on the East End. In addition to his loving family, he nurtured enduring friendships with a coterie of companions including poets, artists, jurists, scientists, librarians and workers, who remember him for his generosity of spirit, his wit and his extraordinary sense of humor.
Mr. Braunstein is survived by his wife of 38 years, Gail; a son, Harry and wife Jennifer; and grandchildren, Lucas and Abraham.
Mr. Braunstein was interred in Sag Harbor. An unveiling will be held at a later date; the family may be contacted at email@example.com. Memorial donations may be sent to Doctors Without Borders, www.doctorswithoutborders.org.
